Horizontal Slat Fences
Long horizontal slats between posts. The most popular modern front fence look.
Aluminium slat fencing Wagga Wagga homeowners choose is mostly for the front of the house, courtyards and pool surrounds, where a solid steel sheet would feel heavy. Slats let breeze through on still summer evenings while still screening the view.
We install slat fences, privacy screens, matching pedestrian and driveway gates, and slat infill panels on rendered or brick piers.

Long horizontal slats between posts. The most popular modern front fence look.

Upright slats that suit narrow side passages and taller courtyard screens.

Slat panels fitted between brick or rendered piers on new or existing front walls.

Pedestrian, swing and sliding driveway gates framed to match the fence slats.
Small gaps block most of the view from the footpath while letting a little light and air pass.
Larger gaps keep the garden visible and feel lighter, which suits low front fences.
Wider slats read as a bolder, more architectural face; narrow slats look finer and more detailed.
Solid sections near seating areas and open sections near the street. One run can combine both.
Aluminium does not rust, but its coating takes the knocks. Choose a finish with heat, dust and cleaning in mind.
| Finish | Characteristics | Typical applications | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Satin dark powder coat | Smooth, even colour with low shine. | Modern facades and dark trims. | Gets hot to the touch in afternoon sun and shows pale dust more readily. |
| Light and neutral powder coat | Pale greys, whites and stone tones. | Light rendered and weatherboard homes. | Stays cooler but marks from garden soil and sprinklers can show at the bottom slat. |
| Timber-look coating | Printed woodgrain finish on aluminium. | Owners wanting warmth without staining. | Gives the look of timber without the upkeep, though close up it reads as a printed finish. |
| Textured finish | Fine texture in the coating. | High-traffic areas near driveways and bins. | Hides minor scuffs better than a smooth satin coat. |
A slat fence is mostly straight lines. Small errors in set-out show up immediately, so planning is detailed.
Horizontal slats must be dead level even when the ground is not. We set heights from a fixed datum, not the soil.
Slats catch less wind than solid sheet, but tall screens still need adequate posts and footings.
Front fences often have lower height limits. We check before you fall for a tall screen.
Fences beside driveways should not block the view of footpath users when reversing out.
We confirm slat size, gap, colour and height, and mark gate positions on a simple plan.
Posts are set out at even centres so every bay is the same width.
Posts are concreted or bolted to piers and checked for plumb in both directions.
Slats are fitted with spacers or channels for an even gap from top to bottom.
Gates are hung so their slats line up with the fence on either side.
Protective film is removed, fixings checked, and the site cleared.
The parts behind the slats keep them straight and quiet in the wind.
Posts sized to height and span, with base plates for mounting onto concrete or piers.
Channels hold slat ends and spacers set the gap, so slats cannot bow or rattle.
Driveway slat gates run on tracks or as cantilever gates, ready for a motor if wanted.
Keyed latches, magnetic latches and pool-compliant hardware where the slat fence forms part of a barrier.

A builder has finished the piers. The owners want horizontal slats and a matching sliding driveway gate.

A deck overlooks the neighbour's yard. A tall vertical slat screen blocks the view and lets breeze through.

Owners want privacy near the pool, so the screen is placed to keep climbable rails out of the barrier zone.
These cards describe the kind of brief we price. They are not photographed local jobs; images are placeholders until project photos are added.

View serviceSlat fencing is priced by height, length, slat size, gap and finish, plus gates and how posts are fixed.
| Gap size | Narrow gaps need more slats per bay than wider gaps. |
|---|---|
| Height | Taller screens need heavier posts and more slats. |
| Finish | Timber-look and special colours usually cost more than standard powder coat. |
| Mounting | Bolting to existing piers differs from concreting new posts. |
| Gates | Sliding and swing gates with matching slats are priced separately. |
Tighter gaps use more slats per metre, so privacy level has a direct effect on price.
Get a slat fencing quoteWith tight gaps it blocks most views from the street, but it will never be fully solid. If you need complete privacy, Colorbond or lapped timber is better.
Aluminium does not rust. The powder coat can scratch, so avoid hitting the base with mowers and trimmers.
Usually, if the piers are sound and plumb. We check pier condition and spacing before quoting.
A gentle wash with water and mild detergent removes dust. Avoid harsh solvents and abrasive pads on the coating.
Slat screens can be used near pools, but horizontal slats can be climbable. If the fence forms part of the barrier, it must meet AS 1926.1.
We build sliding gates ready for automation. Motors and wiring are installed by a licensed electrician or gate specialist.
Send photos of the frontage or screen area and the look you like. We will measure, confirm gap and height options, and send a written quote.
Slat fencing works best on frontages, courtyards, decks and pool surrounds, where looks matter and some airflow is welcome. It is not the cheapest way to fence a long rear boundary, and it is not fully private.
We will steer you towards steel or timber on hidden runs if that saves money, and we will not install horizontal slats as a pool barrier without checking climbability first.
